Our History
Rooted in Detroit since 1957, the West Side Cubs honor a legacy of community, grit, and excellence for every aspiring athlete.
A Legacy Born from Determination
The West Side Cubs were founded during a time when many Black children were denied the opportunity to participate on predominantly white youth football teams. Rather than allowing discrimination to define their future, community leaders came together to create an organization where every child could compete, develop confidence, and pursue their dreams.
What began as a neighborhood football program quickly became one of Detroit's most respected and successful little league football organizations. Through hard work, outstanding coaching, supportive families, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, the West Side Cubs produced generations of athletes who excelled not only on the football field but in classrooms, workplaces, and communities throughout the country.
Many former Cubs earned all-city and all-state honors in high school, received college scholarships, and continued their athletic careers at universities across the nation. Some achieved the dream of playing professional football, while countless others became successful business owners, educators, public servants, military veterans, first responders, coaches, and community leaders. Regardless of where life has taken them, they all share one common bond—they are forever part of the West Side Cubs family.
Honoring Those Who Made a Difference
The West Side Cubs Alumni Association proudly celebrates the men and women whose dedication and achievements embody the spirit of our organization. Through our Hall of Fame and alumni recognition programs, we honor former players, coaches, cheerleaders, volunteers, and community leaders who have distinguished themselves through athletic achievement, educational excellence, professional success, military service, and selfless commitment to serving others.
Our honorees represent the very best of what the West Side Cubs stand for. Their accomplishments inspire today's youth to dream bigger, work harder, and understand that success is measured not only by victories on the field but by the positive impact made throughout life.
Supporting Today's West Side Cubs
While honoring our past is an important part of our mission, investing in the future is equally important. The West Side Cubs Alumni Association works year-round to ensure that today's young athletes have access to quality facilities, safe equipment, and opportunities to succeed.
Funds raised through donations, sponsorships, fundraising events, and community partnerships directly support the current West Side Cubs football program. These contributions help maintain and improve the historic football field, renovate and preserve the field house, repair bleachers and concession facilities, purchase uniforms and protective equipment, provide football supplies and training resources, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate regardless of financial circumstances.
Our commitment also extends beyond football. The WSCAA awards scholarships to deserving student-athletes who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to their communities. By investing in education, we continue the tradition of preparing young people for success both on and off the field.
More Than Football
The West Side Cubs have always been about more than wins and championships. They have been about family, mentorship, discipline, respect, and community pride. Every practice, every game, every volunteer, and every supporter has helped create an environment where young people learn responsibility, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership.
For many alumni, the lessons learned while wearing a West Side Cubs uniform became the foundation for lifelong success. Today, those same alumni return to mentor young athletes, volunteer their time, support fundraising efforts, and ensure that the next generation experiences the same opportunities they once received.
